Orange County Fair – 4H Judging Day

July 15 is judging day for 4-H projects, bring your projects from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to the Orange County Fair Grounds. The fair is not officially open yet, just the 4-H exhibit buildings, so it is free to get in.

See Nancy, Dawn or any other mom who has entered projects in the past.  You will need special tags for each project and a judging sheet that were sent in the big white Fair book.  It is not too hard to do and your child can earn about $1 per exhibit for each blue ribbon, that can really add up!

Also, see Nancy if you want to get into the fair (during the week it is open) for $1 per family member.  You and your family must have paid your 4-H enrollment fee and be registered in order to receive the passes. Deadline to order passes is July 7.

Subway Apologizes to Homeschoolers

Follow up on the letter from HSLDA.  Subway has apologized with a up coming contest that will “include” homeschoolers.  What about including us in the current one???  All they have to state is that no “individual” may win the prize, that it must be received by a public, private or non-profit organization.  Our local Youth Recreation Department which runs tennis lessons, soccer, baseball little league, pop warner football and more would have gladly received this prize.  These are organizations that allow all tax payers in their towns to participate in their organizations.  We also have a local YMCA camp, a bunch of non-profit Bible camps, many preschools; shoot, I would have donated it to the local school so my children’s friends could reap the benefits.

Online petition against Subway

Thanks to HSLDA re: Subway and Homeschooling

Thank you to HSLDA for their letter to Subway.

http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/200805270.asp

We have recently been trying to work with the Port Jervis School District in asking them to allow homeschoolers to participate in events at and around the school.  It would have been nice for a homeschooler to be able to donate $5,000 to the school district as a good will gesture.  Many people just assume that we as homeschoolers are anti-schools.  They don’t realize how many homeschool families work as teachers in these schools.  Hopefully this event with help shed light on the fact that homeschool families are American’s too, of the “United” States of America.

Subway – No Homeschoolers Welcome

Wow, todays buzz around other homeschool and Christian sites are all raging about the new Subway writing contest that allows:  “elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.”

Here are a few sites that I found some interesting information on.  Please google keywords Subway and Homeschool, you will not believe what you will find.  This is very sad that our children are being excluded.    Well, guess I won’t be eating there any time soon.

What’s the matter, they afraid we’re going to win!!!

New Classes for 2008-09

After the 2 meetings on Thursday, May 22, here is some of what was discussed.

For 8th Grade and up

4-H classes for Home Ec, Fiber (cloth sewing and/or crochetting) and/or wood working

Chemistry for High School on Tuesday

Spanish II (Part 1) both Full and Alternate Days – same as this past year

Speech and writing class

Guitar – beginner and/or intermediate

Law Practice, Moot Court, Business Law, not sure what we are calling it yet

Cupstacking

Book Discussion/English Lit

Pre-K thu 1st

Discussion focused on Pre-school Concepts and Concepts class with regards to making the syllabus more specific as to what should be taught such as:  Language/phonics, science and math.  This will ensure that there isn’t a lot of redundancy in Fine Arts classes which have their own time slot.  More clarity will be made for that class also, stating that it is visual art, drama, music and so on.  There was great discussion from mothers of older students who have been in LEAP for many years of what things work and what didn’t.

Post your comments or suggestions here,  Dawn

Port Jervis Lego Robotics Team

Port Jervis Lego Robotics Team      (Team name to be decided soon)

The information below will help you decide if you will be able to commit to the team.

This is a great opportunity for team fun, learning computer and construction skills, and unique competition.

To begin, we will meet all four Tuesdays in June. We hope to have everyone attend at least 3 of the four June meetings.. We hope to meet 3:15 to 5pm each scheduled meeting date. The league suggests 2 hour practices two times per week. As we will meet less than half of that so we will need to be committed to the times we do meet and focused on the assigned tasks, ready to follow directions, and respectful of the equipment being used. (This includes that purchased by the club, some donated, and also the use of personal laptop computers). Anyone who has difficulty with this may risk not being allowed to continue on the team and forfeiting their fee.

A draft schedule is below allowing for approximately 20 meetings between now and the competition date in late January or February (date TBA). We would like to require that members attend 75% of the meetings with the greatest emphasis on June and Nov. leading up to competition. Hopefully this will allow each of your to work around other schedule and season commitments.

During June we will be focused on teambuilding and learning the basics so we are well on our way by September. We will be judged on teamwork at competition. Our success in this may be more important then our Lego abilities, so everyone is expected to exemplify team sportsmanship throughout the season. We are also part of a larger Orange County 4-H team (three others who meet separately in Middletown). Occasionally we will meet with them for special events, speakers, trips or trainings.

Draft Schedule:  (Tuesdays 3:15 to 5pm, location TBA)

4 Tuesdays in June—6/3, 6/10, 6/17, 6/24

2 Tuesdays in July—7/8 (possible orange county fair prep. and participation),  & 7/29

1 Tuesday in August—8/5

Every other Tuesday, Sept. 9 to Dec. 16. (total 8 )

Every or every other Tuesday starting Jan. until Competition (total 5-6)

–this will be tentative until we know more about our team and the competition.

There may be other activity dates given by Orange County which we believe will be mostly optional.

You should reply yeah to this email and plan to attend the first meeting on 6/3 if you have decided to join. You will need to bring an initial check for $30 made out to Orange County 4-H at that time.  This will register you on the team and as a 4-H Lego team member. If you want to be a part of the team but cannot make the first meeting you should mail the check to us in order to reserve your spot. We may need to fund raise or ask for additional funds once the team is finally assembled and we see where we lie financially.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Scott Reichert & Ben Willis, Leaders
